Chief Winemaker Warren Gibson's Tasting Notes
Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2011:
A warm year. Picked earlier than normal to miss the wet weather that was coming later in season The only wine to have no significant malolactic fermentation. This took a few years to show its best and is really singing now. Drink now to 2025.
4 stars, Michael Cooper Buyer's Guide 2013. 92 points & 4 stars Bob Campbell Master of Wine, October 2012.
Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2012:
A very challenging cool, wet season. Incredibly, with well timed harvesting and thoughtful, measured winemaking, this is one of the stars of the show. Complex with a lick of Burgundy. Champion Wine at the Sydney International Wine Challenge. Drink now to 2025.
92 points & 4 stars, Huon Hooke, April 2014. 92 points & 4 stars, Bob Campbell Master of Wine, February 2014.
Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2013:
Vintage of the generation! A very dry season. Fantastic all round. Delicious now but absolutely no rush to crack the screwcap. Controlled power and complexity. A classic. Drink now to 2030+.
5 stars, Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2016.
Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2014:
Ok then, it’s another vintage of a generation!! A dry season but this time warmer. A complex, generous Chardonnay with a hint of flint. Savoury and delicious. Drink now to 2028.
93 points & 4 stars, Bob Campbell Master of Wine, March 2016. 4.5 stars, Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2017
Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2015:
A more classic Hawkes Bay season with a very typical Summer of warm days interspersed with rain at the right times. Another complex wine that’s sourced largely from 125 Gimblett Road. Savoury and long and held together by a fine, tight frame. No rush. Drink now to 2028.
4.5 stars, Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2017. 94 points, Sam Kim - Wine Orbit, October 2016.
Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2016:
A season close to 2015 in style. This is a slightly richer, fuller wine than the 2015 although a very similar thread of flavour and style. Drinking beautifully right now. Drink now to 2028+.
92 points & 4 stars, Bob Campbell Master of Wine, September 2017. 4.5 stars, Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2018. 95 points, Sam Kim - Wine Orbit, August 2017.
Michael Cooper's Wine Buyer's Guide overall rating for all vintages tasted of the Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay, 5 stars, "This wine is a Potential Classic".
