Here's a few fun facts about these delectable and historic reds that you may not know...
Merlot is a founding variety in Bordeaux, France where it grows alongside other Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Merlot is a versatile grape that is also widely grown in Italy and is seen alongside varieties such as Sangiovese.
Did you know, the movie Sideways was a factor in world sales of Merlot declining for almost a decade? If you haven't already seen it, we recommend watching Sideways in the company of our Hawke's Bay Merlot 2020. Make sure to pay close attention to the special wine at the end of the movie (hint, it's a Merlot!).
The Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2020 was recently awarded a Double Gold Medal and 96 Points at the New Zealand International Wine Show 2022. “The recent excellent results for Trinity Hill Wines at the New Zealand International Wine Show 2022, combined with the hugely successful showing at 2022 Hawke's Bay A&P Bayleys Wine Awards, confirms the strength of recent Hawke’s Bay vintages coming together with the ongoing hard work in the Trinity Hill vineyards and winery. A combined total of ten gold medals; has there ever been a better time to enjoy Trinity Hill wines?”

Tempranillo is a Spanish grape variety widely grown to make full-bodied red wines in Rioja. The root of its name, temprano, is a reference to the fact that it ripens several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. Tempranillo is also seen in Portugal alongside Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa to make dry red wines in the Duro Valley.
Did you know the 2021 Gimblett Gravels Tempranillo is blended with 7% Touriga Francesa in a nod to the Iberian Peninsula, in Portugal?
Our Gimblett Gravels Tempranillo 2021 recently won a Double Gold Medal and the Trophy for Champion International Red Wine Variety at the New Zealand International Wine Show 2022, along with a Gold Medal at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Bayleys Wine Awards 2022.
"This is always one of the most competitive of all classes in the show, with a wide range of red wines styles entered from grape varieties and countries from throughout the world. This trophy backs up our 20+ year journey with Tempranillo and legitimises our investment in this exciting, alternative grape variety."
