Tuesday 12 July 2022: Last week, the International Wine and Spirits Challenge gathered members of their wine judging committee to re-taste all the 2022 gold medal winning wines, selecting only 20 wines as trophy winners – including Trinity Hill’s Single Vineyard 125 Chardonnay 2020.
The 2022 top twenty trophy winning wines include 3 sparkling wines, 5 fortified wines, 2 dessert wines and ten still wines, with Trinity Hill the only New Zealand winery represented in the collection. Trinity Hill’s Single Vineyard 125 Gimblett Chardonnay 2020 was also the only Chardonnay to be selected by the judges for a trophy, an incredible endorsement with over 4,000 wines in total tasted during the challenge.
The 125 Gimblett Vineyard, from which this wine gets its name, is located on 125 Gimblett Road and is in the heart of the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District. Trinity Hill’s Chief Winemaker Warren Gibson says, “The 125 Gimblett Road Vineyard site has a history of making Chardonnay from the early 1980’s, being one of the original sites planted on what is now known as the Gimblett Gravels. A replanting over the last 15 years is now paying serious dividends. The site consistently provides perfectly ripe fruit that is gently transformed into delicious, complex, and powerful wines, that we aim to sit alongside the great Chardonnays of the world.”
Dirceu Vianna Junior MW, IWSC Wine Judging Committee member and one of the trophy panel judges comments, “Tasting the best wines of the competition with some of the most competent judges in the land is a real privilege; but a privilege that carries a lot of responsibility. Standards are always high and the fact that we are given limited information about each wine ensures that the trophy tasting is a level playing field.”
The IWSC judges noted of the wine, “A lovely and inviting wine whose crisp, multi-layered palate shows a beautiful balance of smoky, toasty oak over flavours of fleshy yellow and tropical fruits and a preserved lemon zip. Long, concentrated and complex.”
Trinity Hill’s United Kingdom distributor Liberty Wines, who recently celebrated 25 years, also took home the prestigious award of Wine Distributor of the Year 2022. Trinity Hill has been represented in Liberty Wines’ portfolio since 2014.
Trinity Hill Single Vineyard 125 Gimblett Chardonnay 2020 has a suggested retail of NZD $80. Available at trinityhill.com and from discerning wine retailers.
